Math can be challenging for some. Past experiences can play an important factor. We have to understand that once we start a challenge and the challenge is impeded by others (for example, by saying negative remarks), it is hard to get back up. The same statement can also apply to mathematics. How did your past experiences affect the way you learn math.

Mathematics can be a tough subject for an adult learner. I believe that as adults, our primary focus is to provide for ourselves and our families. Some of the means of attaining that goal is through a better pay; hence the need to constantly educate ourselves. We are driven by a need to learn and a need to succeed. Some of the challenges of learning mathematics are due to the effects of previously bad learning experiences. We have probably sat in a class in the past and the teacher paid very little attention to your educational needs. As children, some of us probably failed a math class because of our lack of effort and that failure became a stumbling block for our future ventures in mathematics. I have discovered that researchers looked at the way children learn in order to build the base on how adults actually get their critical thinking. There are a few similarities in the way that adults and children learn. With prior experiences, adult learners have or acquire a particular way of learning. However, adult learners have the intrinsic value and personal payoff because they have the immediate goal at hand. As adult learners, we want a pay increase or that promotion. Since the primary goal of education is to meet the demands of society and individual needs. And since the two dimensional frame of reference for adult learners are a habit of mind and a point of view, adult learning usually relies on our habits to learn. We can also safely state that adult learning is not in our formal classroom setting (teacher-centered). Instructors do not conform to the standards of the curricula but on the needs of the adult learners as well. Therefore, we need to brake from the chains of bad learning experiences that hold us back and meet this new learning challenge with a renewed attitude. As adults, we have the ability to reflect more on our learning. We can support this argument with Habermas and the three natural needs or reasons to gain knowledge. Let us then break this cycle and regain our love for mathematics.

  1. Numbers in general are an issue. But I've noticed that I tend to struggle less when the class is being taught at a slower pace. Also being able to do examples where students can ask questions as they go is something that serves as a tool in class

  2. Thank you Julio for the comment. Teaching at a slower pace is very possible but we also have to keep in mind the timelimes for curriculum implementation.

  3. Math has always been the subject I have struggled in. It is the subject that really required me to study and do practice problems non-stop to understand the concept and be able to apply it. I agree with Julio in the sense that it is a subject that requires a little more class time. I understand that their are restrictions on the time due to the curriculum but maybe this should be one of those classes offered twice a week. I personally think we should work on several examples for each section so that confusion and doubt can occur in class rather than at home when you have no one to ask for help. This is definitely a subject that requires thought and being able to really grasp the concept because each section builds of the previous one. I don't hate math, I just don't love it. I enjoy a challenge but when I see fractions I just shiver and the "math anxiety" kicks into high gear! "/ Thanks for being patient with us and taking your time on making math FUN!

    1. Thank you for sharing your comment. Doing a lot of examples will certainly help with understanding certain concepts. I also agree with you that more classroom time is needed. Furthermore, we will strive to do as much examples as we can with the time we have.

  4. Where can I begin? As with most normal people I dreaded the thought of returning to an Algebra class. I briefly remember my High School experiences in that class since it was over 25 years so imagine my anxiety. Most of us don't envision ourselves ever using the algebra concepts in our day to day lives so it becomes a challenge to grasp the concept and we kind of close our minds to it. Whether we are aware or not math is all around us in science, engineering, or simple calculations we do relating one thing to another without giving it a second thought. I must say that I will struggle with these X, Y, Zs but will give it my best since these calculations do relate to my chosen field. Class is moving rather quickly and I also wish we could have more examples of the same type of problems before we move on to learning something new.

    1. Thank you for your post Alex! I noted from other discussions that there is a need to cover more examples in class. I will definitely be looking into that. This is why it is important to take advantage of the tutoring sessions that we offer and also to take advantage of Connect. I am always here to help.

  5. Math never came easy for me. I don't know what had happen but it does tie into a challenge and a bad experience through out school. I just never got along with the variables, orders of operation, and the right answer. I would always get lost in between steps and would forget how I would come out with that answer in the first place. Although as time went on, I do realize with math like anything else practice does make perfect. It isn't easy to really sit and attempt a problem that seems over whelming, but when you finally get the right answer it sure does feel like an accomplishment. Practice and asking questions seem to get me through this love hate relationship I have with math. Examples and a good teacher does aid in my success and comprehension with math. So far, so good!

It's frustrating at times because i've seen how it's done a million times and still not be able to do it, it's a little dissapointing.

  8. have never really liked math, I don't really understand too much of it. In high school my class wasn't too bad, but the teacher would fly through the lessons too fast and not really help when I was lost. At Miami Dade my professor didn't follow the lesson plans she had set up, and would give us homework on stuff we hadn't even learned yet. I do not hate math I just think it is so complicated and frustrating. I'm sure once I get to know more I will become more comfortable.

  10. Math has its ups and downs for me. I enjoy math in a chemistry setting because I had an amazing professor. Other math instructors that I have had in the past don't explain fully how to solve a problem or just expected us (the students) to know what we are doing. It has been extremely difficult to get that step by step explanations and thorough walkthroughs of problem solving and having that patient instructor willing to do so, without the rush of wanting to go home and helps when questions are asked. Hopefully, I get over this fear and learn to push through, give math a chance and I know that practice makes perfect.

When it came to the classroom I didn’t have much difficulty keeping up with the material I got so good at I became the teacher’s assistant helping other students understand. I have a love relationship you can never be wrong it either you have the correct answer or you don’t there is no grey area! Taking my algebra class is a refresher on my skills with equations, formulas and functions and many other areas. I hope taking this class can refresh my memory and brush up on my skills as well as learn new skills.

I believe that I have never had a teacher that has been able to get through to me and helped me understand the concept of Math, Making my liking towards Math a zero. It has never been enjoyable to me since it has not been something I have been able to succeed in. I know practice makes perfect but you have to know what you're practicing in order to perfect the subject. I want to get to the stage of feeling comfortable with Math and confident in my ability to succeed in a Mathematical world.

    2. I have a general fear of math. It began when I was 12. My father was in the
Military and we moved frequently. I began my new school in Texas, in my math
class, it was test day. I went to class realized I forgot my pencil. I asked the teacher to go get the pencil, and I was ignored. The test was handed out. I began to cry. The Teacher took me outside the class room door. She gave me 3 wallops of her paddle, one swat was for not being prepared for class, one for crying, and the other for the 0 I would be receiving on the test. I have moved on.
I never really liked math since then. I try to avoid any Math challenges. In High
school I only took Applied and Consumer Math classes. I have prided myself on
problem solving though out my life. Testing failure is not an option, I can afford right
now. My education is so important to me. My lack of algebra foundation skills is hindering me from reaching my goals.
I have about 15 hours a week I can use to study and do homework.
I have 4 classes this semester. I have to work on time management. I have to ask more questions in class.
Be more active in class, So that I can have a lasting memory of the lesson being taught.

  15. In the beginning math was a breeze, but once they added letters and fractions it became difficult. The further I moved along in school the more I began to hate it. It didn't help much that I had teachers that were unwilling to help or didn't speak much English. I was pretty much discouraged from learning it and just felt I would never fully comprehend it

Now, this was High School times, long time ago and, though we do implement math in most of our everyday tasks, we are talking Algebra. And now, I am a little intimidated. I do not know what to expect, but I am sure that mu attitude will have a lot to do with it and whatever it is that is coming my way, it better be ready for me!

We use math in our everyday life as a child I thought that math was just an annoyance but as I got older I found myself referring back to the math I learn in school. No matter what you want to be or do in life you can be sure math will be a very important part of it. So now I absorb all that I can in my math class to better myself and to help my children nurture a love for math.

  26. I absolutely HATE math. Not because I am bad at it, but because I have had many teachers that are more into receiving homework than actually making sure the classwork is understood. Sequence 3 was the main math class that turned me off of the subject as a whole. The teacher spoke horrible English, and then he was not able to engage me. That lead to me giving less attention in and out of class. If a teacher can some how make the formulas easier to understand and provide the personal attention i may need, without being taken to far off topic by other students, then i MAY enjoy the subject a little more. Although i do not enjoy math i do enjoy using simplified formulas to figure out drop factor and pediatric dosages.

  29. My passed experiences had an effect on how I learn math because I had a solid introduction to this subject as a child. Math use to be my favorite, but as time went by my interested diminished. This decrease in interest was not based off of my ignorance to the understanding of math, but was based on the approach my passed professors took teaching this skill. As the years progressed math became more difficult, and bland; thus leaving me with no choice but to lose interest. Although I had a strong understanding on the basic concepts, everything that came after was never really revealed to me. Now I will take it upon myself to learn these new techniques and formulas and apply them to the concepts I already know.

  30. As a child growing up (in my middle school days) I always hated math with a passion. To me it was kind of like why learn something that your not gonna use so often. I didn't get along with multiplication and division and converting decimals was something I never really understood and don't get me started with fractions, anything involving fractions made my head spin out of control. But once I hit high school it was like clock work I started getting everything. My teachers were so exceptional they made sure I had everything and stood by my side until I got everything. So now on this day I can proudly say math is my favorite subject.

  33. Math has been the subject that has more likely never put me to sleep. I enjoy equations that have to do with letters and number just going to one side to the next. Growing up not everyone in my family could explain the concepts. So, I just forced myself to learn it and now I enjoy it. But I have met my challenge in math that when it came to adding and subtracting negative and positive integer I just froze. Them when it came to word problems it was just boring to me. I feel no teacher has made it not fun but show a good way to understanding the whole concept of the word problems. Sometimes with measurements I have had difficulties but I have somewhat understood that. But, to the rest of the math numbers I enjoy everything else about it. Slower pace is good to me but I just like the whole trick thing like for example Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally. Like this I have always applied since middle school hopefully you have a faster way for word problems and the adding and subtracting integers. I intend to study hard and pass to move forward to be a nurse.

I mean I do so well with all my classwork and homework assignments, help out others who don't understand it, and then get to the test and just fail it. I mean it doesn't happen all the time, but I could never figure out why. I use to always think it was anxiety, that makes me sit in front of the test and just forget everything I've learnt. But it wasn't. It took me long enough but I've finally come to the realization that the ONLY reason I fail the tests is because, I get so worked up about failing rather than just applying what I've learnt, and passing like I do with the classwork and homework assignments.

I don't know if it was the fact that I wouldn't be able to understand the teachers half of the time, they didn't explain themselves well enough so I would just not give it my all. But my professor know has a great teaching style, he explains step by step andmakes the problem that are hard (like fractions) seem easy. I believe that that's is the reason why I'm doing better in algebra and I'm understanding more.

  46. I have to agree with some parts of the first blog and disagree with others because from my experience the less money an adult student has the harder they work to make a better life for the family. I came from nothing and worked my self very hard to get my first degree. I struggled with everyday issues such as work kids husband. The fact is the less a person has the harder they work to overcome the poverty level.
Math to the adult students is harder the longer they have been out of school. Ones who have been out 20 years or more are often overlooked. Instructors like to say that it should be remembered from high school. Older adult students never learned the some of the math they use now. In the 80's the math was way different. If instructors could just kind of remember not all adult students are not in their 20's or 30's. Many adult students will learn more if they are not overlooked by teachers. Math is hard but i can do it weekly but exams are tough. I feel pressured to finish and that causes mistakes plus i draw blanks on certain sections

I continued my education by obtaining two associates degree, one in Certified Clinical Medical Assisting, and the second in Health Information Management Technician. I believe I took a basic math course, but nothing like this. I have a gap between pre algebra and college algebra. I have had testing anxiety for years. When I'm taking a test, if the test is being timed, it's next to impossible for me to focus on the test and not the time. I could never understand what they are asking me for and it would always aggravate me and I'm like you know what forget about it. Graphing I hate it so much especially if fractions are involve like I would always get the slopes and the intercepts backwards and if it there are fraction involve I have to turn it into decimals for me to at least understand it but if it is the most simplest form than OK fine I get it but if not I wont be able to understand it at all. 53. My past experiences in math has always been a positive one. I have had several great math professors in the past. I always pushed myself to keep ahead of the game when it came to the subject of math so that I'd be one step ahead of the rest. I began taking college level math at age 11. However, even with this background I have several weaknesses in math. I tend to have a problem with the formulas as there are so many to choose from. Sometimes I plug in the wrong formula to math problems. I also tense up when I take timed exams. I blank out on some math problems although I know how to solve them. I also have the tendency to rush through the math problem and make mistakes in doing so. My strengths are that I like the subject of math. I think that it is like putting the pieces of a puzzle together in order to get an end result. I also like algebra since it involves the use of both numbers and letters. It makes the math problem more fun. I also can compute mathematical problems in my head versus on paper. Math comes easy to me if I have a great teacher who is patient and can adapt to everyone's needs.

Most of the things I know of any math topic was self taught or my daughters teaching me. It is however a past experience very recently that allowed me to have some hope. My professor teaches, he breaks it down, he give you the best ways to understand, he give you step by step approach, he tries to get us all on the same page before moving on, if all fails he offers tutoring to students who needs it. He is great at what he does, love what he does and because of the interest he places in his students I now have a good chance of learning math.

Part was because I had little interest in math and the other part was that I had teachers that would not go in to detail with the material that they were trying to teach me. So this made me dis like math and not want to learn it. I hope with this course I can learn all the material required of me to the best of my abilities and to walk out of the class fully understanding the material that was being taught to me.

  61. Math, A very difficult subject to most people, to me math is very interesting, I love math, because as a child growing up I loved math. Math is only difficult to me when they put it in a sentence and ask us to figure out the answer when there is no problem to be solved that’s when I get frustrated. But other than that, problem solving is my thing. I learn fast and love numbers. Give me a problem and I will solve it. But don’t put it in a sentence please.

  62. Well numbers are actually a favorite of mine but, when it comes to the other things like letters and shapes in algebra I get intimidated by them. I’m looking forward to learning it again at this time in my life. You seem like you’re going to make this easy. Thank you

  63. Well for me math had always been my fear-est courses. Back in high school i was one of the teen that would fall asleep during class time, I cant really focused when it comes to math because of all the adding, subtracts and all the functions. It gives me the chill that i would not always do well in math.

  64. Math has always been very difficult and extremely confusing. I am willing to overcome that fear that I have for math, and take a chance to learn and understand, the proper way to solve equations, fractions....etc

  67. The merest mention of Algebra makes me think of failure. Yet I remember my high school math teacher to be very good in the delivery of the subject. I think I am feeding off the negativity of what I hear constantly. In this course I vow to cast aside all that I know and to embrace this learning experience.

  68. College algebra can be challenging, but as I am in the program which is filled with so many other challenges, I am prepared to work as hard as I can to be good at this. Just as I overcome all of life’s hurdles, so I will prevail. Maybe I should not look at this as a hurdle. I think I will be fine as long as I get over the fear. It will take time, but I know I will.

  69. math to has been always difficult for me. I have come to understand that the best results to tackle a problem is continues repetition of the concept. one I understand the underlining factor of the problem it becomes absolutely easy. My goal to do well in math is to always stop understand the problem and practice. I hope my experience in college will be a better one compared to high school.

  71. Mathematics it has always been a though subject for me and I believe it has been because I had been somewhat frightened of the information that it involves. In high school I really enjoyed mathematics since the teacher liked what he did and he thought with a passion even when a student had difficulties he would stop and teach it. But everything changed when I did my very first class in college, as being an adult I was more dedicated to school and to learning and I was really looking forward to really learn in the math class, unfortunately my professor did not like to spend time on teaching an individual that was left behind and there is where my major frightening for math begun. I remember I would go to class every day with a knot in my stomach since I knew that if I did not understood something I would have to figure it out by myself later on, and that is exactly what I did, every day that I would go out of the class and get home I would study by myself and that is how I passed the class. As of right now I am still kind of frightened about all of the math subject and I am really looking forward to eliminate that felling and feel good about it, and I believe I will conquer that by having a professor that is willing to have patience and dedication to teach me what I need to learn.

  72. Mathematics is a very difficult subject to me, probably because I was focus in my idea of study medicine and in our countries we do not have to get a general education like here in Unite States. Only with your high school classes you go straight to your main courses, and that way you just jump into the core classes depend on your specialty. Many times people are afraid of face things that they are new or not familiar with and that is what happens to me. I consider myself a good student and I going to do my best to get a good experience with math.
