How to successfully increase test taking skills for adult learners: a comprehensive research aimed at ultimately having adult learners testing aptitudes evaluated with some recommendations.

Abstract
Testing aptitudes in the adult learning setting is an aspect in which similarities exists between the potential of adult learners to pass their weekly assignments and the levels at which they are passing their exams.  Testing aptitude skills are vital for the adult learners’ achievement in all aspects of life.  Adult learners need to have strong testing skills in order to succeed within the confines of school life and real life applications.
Introduction
The goal of this research is to ultimately have adult learners testing aptitudes evaluated and make some tacit recommendations.  The goal will be reached by utilizing an effective teaching strategy while getting student feedback throughout the process.  The objectives are to elevate the adult learners’ mastery level on passing their weekly assignments and ultimately their courses. Adult learners will accomplish this by engaging in a survey that has been specifically designed to increase their testing aptitudes throughout an implementation period.  The implementation period will be the duration of the course or the program that the adult learner is enrolled in. Also, through the survey, adult learners will have a chance to select their preferred learning style. When adult learners become more engaged, are able to participate in class activities, have sufficient remediation, and are interested in a topic, the research has shown that their passing scores rise significantly.  In the classroom, methods of implementing effective teaching strategies and choosing interesting topics will ultimately increase student achievement in this selected population of adult learners.
Theoretical Framework
As instructors, we use routines during lessons to deliver instruction, however, the usual classroom routine sometimes are not effective for developing new concepts. In my opinion, the adult learner will not have a deep understanding of the lesson and pass their required assessments. That is why the teacher would not be able to teach the subject effectively to them. An adult learner’s mind is at full point of maturity, therefore most concepts should be understood. It is our job to find out what styles adult learners want to learn in because they are, for the most part, set in their ways. Adult learners will need to know the gist of how the classroom will operate. Currently, most adult learning program or courses stress goals and objectives based on building knowledge and using skills in a coordinated curriculum. They fail to provide strategies for instruction early in the course. I do not think that in andragogy, education should be only taught by a content area specialist because a lot of other factors come into play. We, as teachers, need to account for each and every one of our students. A content-area specialist sole focus will be teaching the curriculum and make sure that every student understands the concept being taught. But there is a need to know what everyone brings to the table and how to better reach our students and therefore help raise their testing aptitudes.
Perhaps the greatest challenge that educators face is enabling adult learners that are subjected to different stresses of life improve their test taking skills. Many of these adult learners have children of their own who also face considerable barriers to their learning. Nearly 20 percent of Americans live in poverty, and they achieve academically at much lower levels than their more affluent peers. What can educators do to help such adult learners improve their test taking skills? In order to answer that question, we need to analyze every aspect of the adult learner’s abilities. We will develop a survey for that purpose.
Literature review
Dallmer (2004) suggests that adult learners should take their test cooperatively. The author cites that the testing atmosphere for some students is both hostile and unproductive. The author continues by stating that it can cause anxiety for some adult learners. Passing a test is an important factor of keeping the adult learner motivated. It is possible that test anxiety may re-occur if it played an important role in the past for adult learners.  Past test taking experiences may either hinder or help the adult learner. It is important to understand that aspect in the adult learner’s testing abilities. The author finishes by suggesting a cooperative test taking method associated with the quantity of recall. Kecker (2007) attempted to determine what teachers can do to develop responsible students with the knowledge, skills, and compassion to meet the challenges of their curriculum. The author also attempted to determine if teachers possessed the understanding of the content and the resources offered to efficiently incorporate environmental education into their instructional programs. Peterson and Mayer (2002) focused on specific aspects of schooling that influence the way student learns, such as classroom size, and curriculum, as well as the effectiveness of structural reforms. The relationship between cognitive test scores and economic success is of particular interest. The author determined that the higher the poverty levels in certain areas, the higher the chances of students (adult learners in this particular research) are in failing their assessments due to life stresses and challenges.
Methodologies
Adult learners are our target population and we will simply offer a survey during week one of our class or program. Before considering the testing abilities of our adult learners, we need to be aware of their particular learning styles. We need to cater to the perception, input, organization, processing and understanding dimensions. We also need to be aware of Blanchard situational leadership styles. The survey will consist of first asking what the students’ best learning styles are and display all possibilities with examples. The survey will then ask specific questions relating to how students have scored for previous assessments or exams. The survey will also ask questions about how students personally feel about testing and what their preferences are when they are testing. Studies have been conducted encouraging the effectiveness of the use of surveys in adult instruction, with findings that document the success of this type of instruction. A copy of the survey is attached in the Appendix section of the paper.

Findings
The instructor will need to constantly evaluate their courses or programs throughout the implementation of the survey’s findings with the use of weekly communications.  The initial results will reveal that the flow of the course will increase by 30 percent with the implementation of a differentiated instruction. The students’ progress will be closely monitored throughout the course or program by the instructor who will consider the students learning styles.  In addition, the instructor will also work with the students to make sure that all of the assignments are turned in on time.  The students will be asked to keep an agenda where they will write all of the assignments and any other important information such as tests, and projects. If the students have a grade of 70 percent or higher on their assignments and multiple in-class activities, the main goal of the survey has been successfully obtained.  Interviews will also be given throughout the course or program.  The interviews will be used to determine the adult learners’ interest in the class, their preferred methods of instruction, and their thoughts on the course.
Conclusion
We need to revamp our teaching strategies in adult education in order to meet our students’ needs and increase their test taking abilities. Past teaching strategies have simply included direct instruction. A new way of teaching, which includes differentiated modes of instruction and the use of a survey in the beginning stages of our classes, needs to be executed.  They need to have as goal the self-directed learner. Researches have been conducted promoting the effectiveness of differentiated instruction and the use of surveys. Some might argue that the adult population is learning considerably less than they should. They are in our classrooms unable to think critically, and probably account for a significant amount of the reason assessment scores does not show much improvement.  In the future, these groups of students might be potential underachievers. As adults, we are typically set in our ways and usually only focus on paying the bills. In the light of this dilemma, we have to ask ourselves this question, should we or should we not consider promoting a program or course that will help the adult learner set better goals for success by becoming better test takers?

Return to Professor Fleurantin by GLADYS NUĂ‘EZ

I have suffered from test taking anxiety for years, probably since I started college. My freshman year of college I remember walking into an exam exhausted because the week before I was having trouble sleeping from being so nervous to take the exam. My problem is I second guess myself and sell myself short when it comes to my studies. I graduated high school top of my class and I thoroughly enjoyed school. Once I got to college it was a totally different ball game. I was playing softball for the college and had even more pressure on me to keep my grades up. Study in the back of a bus became a burden rather than something I enjoyed doing at one time. I have learned to not over think it. I start studying about to two weeks out, to make sure I hit every topic I am struggling in and have plenty of time to review things several times. I make flash cards and re-write my notes several times. I try to understand the concepts rather than just memorize them so I can apply them without too much thought. I have learned that there is such thing as over studying, and when that happens is when I have the worst levels of anxiety. When i routinely study and look over the material all day I begin to guess myself and my answers.
While taking an exam I read the entire question first then go from there. If it is something I am not sure of I tend to skip it and move onto the next one so I am not wasting too much time. When I spend to much time one particular question and still cannot obtain the answer I tend to feel flustered and then its just down hill from there. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses and test taking skills is a weakness of mine that I am slowly learning to face and conquer. Before I begin every exam I tell myself " MIND OVER MATTER" as a reminder that your mind is your biggest enemy. You can control yourself and your feelings always. If you have properly studied then you should not have a problem!

    1. Interesting post. As adult learners, we focus on our immediate needs and often time forget about the long-term goals. Your long term goals are actually tied to your career goals; therefore, time management is very important. I noted that you enjoy writing essays (which I can see by the way you write), multiple choice and true or false questions. It is normal to feel anxious before a test but a good way to counter that fear is to be prepared.

The word "test" itself makes me nervous. Its a make or break situation most of the time. When in the moment of taking a test, I seem to blank out as if the material is a foreign language I have never seen before. I am usually confidant when it comes down to classroom assignments, participation, and lecture. Although, when it comes down to test taking, I freeze and my mind draws a blank. I used to be very hard on myself if I ever got anything less then an "A", but I have learned as long as I prepared myself and did my best I need to be proud of myself. I think it would be a great idea to design a coarse for adults to help become better test takers. Whether mandatory or not, I think it would be a good way to help open up a mind of a person who sees test taking as a fear.

  3. Hello Jasmine,

I noted that you like multiple choice questions. You did not state if you like true or false questions. I also noted that you want to improve your test taking skills. It is ok to be stressed before taking a test but it seems like you are not comfortable with test taking at all. It is important to understand that the results of a test let the instructor know where you stand in the class. Ideally, the instructor would use that data to remediate. It also lets the student know if they need to take the class a little more seriously. My recommendation is to always be prepared and review the material before a test. It is human to be nervous but do not get discouraged if you get a bad grade. I would make plans to see the instructor instead to see what I can do better.

  4. I have never really liked taking tests. Sure tests let you know how you are grasping the material but the thought of taking one always brings anxiety. The occasional quiz is fine but to be judged on one big test seems to be too much. You are likely to forget some of what you've learned because of the anxiety that builds up when so much is riding on just one test considering it would be very hard to recover from just one bad test grade. But since testing is part of life you learn to roll with the punches. By the way timing these test does not make them any easier......just a thought.

  6. Math can be more challenging for some than for others. I am one if those people that it is VERY challenging for. I consider myself to be a very intelligent woman. I’ve done a lot in my ?? of life. However, math has always been my enemy. I have never been very good at it. I can only hope and pray that I can get through this class with a good grade and learn at the very least the basic knowledge of what is ALGEBRA.

  7. I have a general fear of math. It began when I was 12. My father was in the
Military and we moved frequently. I began my new school in Texas, in my math
class, it was test day. I went to class realized I forgot my pencil. I asked the teacher to go get the pencil, and I was ignored. The test was handed out. I began to cry. The Teacher took me outside the class room door. She gave me 3 wallops of her paddle, one swat was for not being prepared for class ,one for crying. and the other for the 0 I would be receiving on the test. I have moved on. I
never really liked math since then. I try to avoid any Math challenges. In High
school I only took Applied and Consumer Math classes.I have prided myself on
problem solving though out my life.Testing failure is not an option, I can afford right
now. My education is so important to me. My lack of algebra foundation skills is hindering me from reaching my goals.
I have about 15 hours a week I can use to study and do homework.
I have 4 classes this semester. I have to work on time management. I have to ask more questions in class.
Be more active in class, So that I can have a lasting memory of the lesson being taught.

Test days are always the hardest days for students, whether you’re an adult learner or a child. They make you anxious asking yourself questions like did you study enough, do you know what the material, if in the event that you fail how would that affect my current grade and many other things. Schools are always making you’re final grade based on your test scores since they are the assignments that give and take the most points. In my opinion we should take tests because at the end of the day you need to know what you’re going to school for or else you’re wasting time but they shouldn’t count for so much. Why take one big test that focuses on 5 chapters when you can take a test per chapter. Yes that is more studying and preparing but on material you have just studied and applied work into. Most people would consider that a “Quiz” which I guess it can be but you don’t receive as much credit for passing a quiz has you would for passing a test. I am not a math lover; I never have been. I can say that this semester I have learned to like it a little, but this goes back to question # 7,” Do you feel discouraged when you get a bad grade?” Yes I do, but when I get a good grade that pushes me, pushes me to continue doing well and I feel excited and proud of myself. Although the student is the one that is supposed to study and apply them self, the teacher needs to teach and not assume everything is easy since they already know how to do it. Encourage your students and they will appreciate it and will want to learn.

My main problem with test taking is my nerves. I can study for a long time but as soon as I see the test I nervous and my mind goes blank. I have never really done a good job or understood math so that makes me even more nervous, because I always feel like I am doing something wrong. Also, the way I study is more memorization rather than actually understanding what I am doing. Sometimes I feel like that is a bad way to study because i can possibly memorize something wrong or it may not apply to all the problems the same. I think I need to visually study and understand what I am doing and maybe my nerves will calm down, because i would be more confident. I like this class because we have practice quizzes and i feel like this really helps me understand the problems and know how to do them confidently.

I'm a very refined person so talking alot in class is just not something that I do. When it comes to test I feel like even when I believe I know the information, the test do not always reflect that and some teachers are so quick to tell you that you didn't study or that you simply aren't trying. On exams it could be the way the problem is written that simply caused some form of confusion or retaining to much information which is overwhelming, but some teachers automatically assume the worst and I hate that. You break down your work so that it is easy for us to understand and give us work that pertains to the exams which is really helpful. Students respond well to encouragement and knowing they are being supported by their teachers.

Test days are the most stressful days. It comes from the anxiety and stress of actually having to sit down and take the test. I know that the only way to actually retain the material is to learn it. As in algebra we have to memorize formulas. I think I do a good job with studying. It's just when it actually comes to test time and I sit down in front of the computer, my head goes blank. It's not until I actually start to do the questions that I feel a little at ease. I like the fact that we have practice quizzes I find them very helpful in preparing us for the test and since they count for a portion of our grade it's a good thing. I like the fact that we have little reviews before our test, It tends to ease the anxiety a little.

I have always had a difficult time understanding math let alone enjoying it. I seem to have such difficulty with the nervousness that comes with taking an exam. I know in my mind I know the material of what the test is going to be about and I walk into the exam confident, but as the exam begins I start to feel nervous, anxious and then I start to second guess myself. The anxiety of not knowing if I wrote it the correct way even if the answer is correct, the anxiety of looking back to the clock seeing if the time has passe. I go mad and I know that I know the material and I know that I understand the concept but my ocd of writing out the solved problem and checking and rechecking the answer I think holds me back the most. I get nervous with the timing and the process that I had in my mind disappears and that scares me. I am just starting to enjoy math and just seeing the bad grade when I know I have been getting A's in the weekly assignments makes me try and think: what is it that I am doing wrong? What is it that is holding my mind back from just explode with all of the acquired information that I know is there? What if I fail? If I fail I am failing myself and I am failing my family. These are the things that go through my mind when I'm taking an exam. The reviews definitely help before the test and the weekly quiz helps as well. I appreciate the time and effort that is put in to actually teaching us the material and not treating us like idiots. I appreciate you always allowing us to ask you questions no matter how silly they may seem and for that I thank you.

Return to Professor Fleurantin by Claribeth Rodriguez_____________

Lets face it, the word "test" gets everyone anxious and scared. I believe the only way to ease that fear is to study and really learn the material. Math is different from all the other subjects. You cant just read the answers and pretty much guess what can be the right answer, you really have to work the problem because one little number can make your answer wrong. Every time I hear quiz or exam I panic. I always study and pretty much understand the material but when I start the test, I freeze. Sometimes when I have the right answer, I think that I missed a step or forgot to do something and that's when I second guess myself and then immediately start sweating because now I don't know if I am right or not. I find the quizzes and the little reviews you do before the exam very helpful. Its pretty much a refresher and it relaxes me a lot. Most of us have really busy lives and cant find too much time to study for every subject, but we really need to find a way to do so if we want to pass. Failure is an option that I refuse to take. Therefore, I will continue to attend tutoring classes if I feel I need them.

    Feedback:
As a middle-aged women, I do not agree that poverty plays a role in how well a student does academically. I do believe that in a classroom setting all students should be evaluated separately. Not every adult student has had previous educational experience. In lieu of this, these type of adult students will have to be brought up to speed. The adult learner, in my opinion, should take it upon themselves to acquire the knowledge necessary to cope with today’s day and age. This includes to be inclined to learning all the technological means of being able to acquire and cope with educational demands. Not everything can be taught within a classroom setting. The older adult has to become self- motivated, and be open-minded to embracing change. The older aged adult student does have financial obligations, especially if this includes children, and a husband/wife. However, if one is truly motivated what should lay dormant in their minds is that the “sky is the limit”, no matter what age they are.

    1. Thank you for posting Ada. I do understand your point of view but I am a strong believer in Abraham Maslow's philosophy about education that states that one is not able to learn unless their basic needs are not met.

  18. For me as an adult learner I feel that if I can study the material for at least 30 min when it comes time for the test I will have no problem. Sometimes when I don't understand a problem I look at the book for help but the book most of the time leaves me confused because they do not explain all the nessesary steps. Which is frustrating to me. Also if I can not get to a computer I am lost for the quizzes and test. I think there needs to be an app for phones.that can help me study when I do not have access to a computer. With study material on my phone I am more likely to pass the class since I use my phone a lot.

Personally I don't mind taking test. I think they improve my learning skills. When i started hight school, im not going to lie i hated taking tests. I use to get nervious and very anxious. I think that the idea to start a program to better test taking for adults is a great idea, although test taking should not be a problem if you prepare yourself for it. Again it would be a great idea and even tho i don't really get nervous ill be one of the first to attend, as im very bad at changing my thoughts and my answers.

I am actually not a nervous test taker. My entire life. I sure do get anxiety, but I figured that is all from just knowing it’s a test. I simply put that past me and just test my knowledge on whatever it may be. I make sure to take good notes & ask questions in class. My study methods depend on what I am studying. For example if its math I will usually think of something funny to relate it to. If it's science I will use visuals or song. etc.

Test taking is a subject that I personally fear at most occasions. In the summary it says that maybe the strategy of test taking may come from what we learn in class, in my opinion I think that, that is not always true as of sometimes a teacher is very clear and is teaching very well but as a student you just put too much pressure on yourself and when you go make a test you forget about information. I believe that is true that many students face many stressful situations during the day since most work and have children and that is why the learning outcomes are lower than an average teenager since we have more thing on our minds, also there is less time to be focused on studying since one again there are different situations involved. Also I believe since we are adults we expect more of ourselves in the aspect of taking test since we want to do good because at this point we are in school because of a self-choice not an obligation. Also I think that for a teacher is a challenge to know how an adult student feels about test taking since for example a child I believe is more open to telling you what he or she does not know but an adult sometimes has a fear of accepting what is wrong.

  23. In terms of learning or going back to school after many years of been at home with my children I found that my major difficult is to keep up with the technology which is changing constantly, in other hand I am a visual learner I just need to see how to resolve a problem not only the explanation on the books .I also enjoy research. To investigate makes me learn faster and questioning also helps for me. It is not easy and the adults have a different view of things, it is harder to learn new things but not impossible. Every day I am trying to do my best and learn as much as I can.
